The Eldorado was Cadillac's model manufactured from 1953 through 2003 model years. During this long period, Eldorado considerably came in various bodystyles and mechanical layout but it always ranked near the top of the Cadillac line. The first Eldorado introduced in 1953 was a special-bodied, low-production convertible offered in four unique colors and featured a hard tonneau cover over the top. It received two touches that were especially adored by GM styling chief - a wrap around windshield and a cut-down belt line. Throughout the 50s Eldorado was significantly considered as GM's styling leader.
In 1970s, Eldorado gained a newly-designed hardtop with an opera window, a fixed rear side window bounded by the vinyl roof. When all domestic convertibles were phased out in 1976, General Motors seriously promoted the final season of the topless Eldorado as "the last American convertible." The Eldorado platform became the largest car produced by General Motors in 1977 and 1978, the times when rear wheel drive full-size cars were trimmed. For this generation, Eldorados were powered by an 8.2 L behemoth, the largest V8 ever utilized in a production car.
Cadillac Eldorados in 1980s received smaller 5.7 and 6.0L V8s replacing the engines of the preceding models and giving way to far better fuel economy. There were also new appointments added to Eldorado for this generation. These include independent rear suspension and extreme notchback roofline that makes the rear window almost vertical.
An all-new Eldorado appeared in 1992. It was slightly larger than its predecessor and it featured frameless window glass. This car flourished for the rest of the decade with many changes and moderate sales.
