The Allante was Cadillac's initial entry into the luxury roadster market. It was first introduced in 1987 to compete with Mercedes-Benz 560 SL. In its first launching, Cadillac Allante was equipped with 4.1 liter PFI (port fuel injected) V8 engine but it was later replaced by a 4.5 liter PFI V8 rated at 200 horsepower. This engine remained as Allante's power source until 1993, its final year of production, when it was replaced by a more powerful engine.

Allante's chassis was made in Detroit then it was shipped to Italy to mount its body to the chassis. After this, the cars were shipped back to the USA via jetliners for completion. Because of this, Cadillac Allante received incredible phrases such as "the flying Cadillac from Italy" and "the world's longest assembly line."
