The Roadmaster was among Buick's biggest cars that was largely produced in the 1950's and was revived in the '90s. The first Roadmaster, the Series 80, was originally launched way back in 1936. It was powered by the larger version of Buick's two straight-eight overhead valve engines: the 5.2 liters (320 cu in.) that generated 120 horsepower. The initial Roadmaster line up is available in four-door sedan and convertible phaeton models. Aside from Series 80 Roadmaster, other names and Series numbers given to Roadmaster models were Series 40 Special, Series 60 Century, and the giant Series 90 Limited. The Roadmaster was a substantial vehicle, weighing more than 1,814 kg.
After the Second World War the Roadmaster became Buick's top models and its biggest and fastest car. The Roadmaster suddenly become very famous, gaining some 20 percent of Buick's total sales. Nineteen fifty eight became a sad year for Roadmaster fans as Buick decided to dispense it. This nameplate lies dormant for more than 30 years before being revived in 1991.
The 1991 Buick Roadmaster was offered as a B-body station wagon motorized by a 170-horepower, 5.0-liter V8 driving a 4-speed automatic transmission. In 1992 a four-door sedan joined the Roadmaster wagon, getting a 5.7-liter V8 engine that produced 180 horsepower. This engine was also utilized by the Estate Wagon, replacing the 5.0 liter. The Roadmaster receives only minor changes from 1993 model year up to 1996, its final season.
