All Engines All Submodels
Many auto manufacturers in the mid 1960s would issue a high performance package for their major vehicle models. Doing so, however, is something not usually done in General Motors, a company not really known for manufacturing high performance vehicles. Everything changed, however, when the company released the Buick Gran Sport. Not only was it the first notable high-performance car that Buick marketed, it was also considered as one of the most formidable muscle cars of all time.

The Gran Sport was first introduced in 1965 as a high performance package for the Buick Skylark. Known then as the Buick Skylark Gran Sport, the vehicle package sported a 401-cid V8 engine that outputs 325 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. Because of its amazing performance, the vehicle became an instant success, although its high price affected its sales for the following model year.

In 1967, the Buick Skylark Gran Sport was dropped and the Gran Sport became a model of its own. Introduced in the same model year was the Buick GS 400 that is outfitted with a 400-cid V8 engine that outputs 340 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. A junior version of the model was also introduced, called the Buick GS 340 and was equipped with a 340-cid V8 rated at 260 hp with 365 lb-ft of torque. The junior version, however, was upgraded the next model year and became the Buick GS 350 with a 350-cid V8 engine.

Each year after 1967, the various Buick Gran Sport models continued to improve in performance. In 1970, just after GM lifted its corporate ban on engines larger than 400-cid, Buick introduced the Buick GS 455. Equipped with a 45-cid V8 engine, the Buick GS 455 run with 350 hp of power and an enormous 510 lb-ft of torque. Its introduction, however, came too late. In 1971, the North American power crisis erupted and the design and performance of the Gran Sport models was generally affected. In fact, 1971 marked the start of the decline of the Gran Sport and the muscle car era in general. The Buick GS 455 was dropped after the 1973 model year while the Buick GS 350 was dropped a year after.

Today, the various Buick Gran Sport models are favorite restoration subjects for vintage muscle car fanatics.
