The Buick Motor Company is another name in the automobile industry that is reputed of producing highly precision automobiles. Since it started its operation over a hundred years ago, Buick became the largest carmaker in America. What makes Buick cars extraordinary is its unique non-functional ornamentation on its body.
The traditional striking mark of Buick is the portholes. Portholes or vents on the front fenders behind the front wheels are originally called “ventiports”. These portholes appeared in series of three on lower cost Buick models while higher cost models came with four. But later, more than four portholes appeared on Buick’s Lucerne. Lucerne carried six portholes that refer to the engine configuration, a six-cylinder engine.
Not contented with the portholes, Buick came out with another styling cue and that is the “sweepspear”. A sweepspear is a curved line running the length of the car from the front wheel up to the rear wheel. Originally, the sweepswear was a chrome-plated strip but on the two-tone fad of the 50s, the sweepswear separated two different color areas. After that, the sweepswear came out to be a vinyl rub strip or a character line molded into the sheetmetal.
Other than the portholes and sweepswear, Buick has other styling cue such as wide tail lamps and an extraordinary grille. Buick tail lamps, evolved from a tier of small circular bullet-shapes in 1950’s to wide taillamps in the 60s until later models appeared to have a full-width rear lamps. Buick’s striking grille came out to be horizontal oval with many thin vertical chrome ribs. From earlier Buick models like your Buick Commercial Chassis or your friend’s Eight Sedan and Buick Skylark to latest models of Lacrosse and Lucerne, Buick’s trademarks are always present.
Another Buick pride is the valve-in-head engine which earned Buick an unsurpassed reputation in early competition. Aside from hallmarks like the sweepswear, potholes, hardtops, and muscle cars, Buick pioneered the modern car industry.
