The 5-Series got its name by being the fifth of the new series of vehicles of BMW. There are five generations of the 5 Series to date. In 1989-1996 was the time of the third generation which is E34. The E39 exist 1996-2003, which is the fourth generation. And lastly from 2004-present, the E60 including the E61 is the fifth generation.

It is consisting of a baby six Turbo Diesel 2.4 L Straight-6, 114 hp (85 kW) at about 4,500 RPM. The baby six motor found in BMWE 524td model is known as the M20. The M20 is a 12 valve SOHC inline six cylinder design. This motor was first available in the European market for model year 1976.
