The Ultimate Driving Machine – this is BMW’s famous tagline. Founded in 1913, BMW (Bavarian Motor Works) Corporation is considered as the world’s largest luxury automobile manufacturer. Its subsidiary car brands include the BMW MINI and Rolls-Royce, formerly including the Rover. In addition, BMW remains to be one of the toughest competitors in the automobile industry particularly against Acura, Alfa Romeo, Audi, Cadillac, Infiniti, Jaguar, Lexus, Lincoln, Mercedes Benz, Volvo, Saab and Porsche. It has also introduced some of most spectacular car models through the years including the BMW New Class in 1960s.
In 1962, BMW spawned a line of compact sedans named BMW 1500. Initially, it made use of the 4-cylinder, BMW M10 engine, but such powerplant was upgraded over time. The original 1.5-liter engine became 1.6-liter then 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter engines bearing different names to represent the evolution. Moreover, the New Class models are equipped with a fully independent suspension featuring MacPherson struts in front coupled with front disc brakes. In 1972, New Class models, which end in “0”, were replaced by the bigger BMW 5 Series, while the upscale 2000C and 2000CS coupes were replaced by the six-cylinder BMW E9 coupes. Mechanically, the New Class models are quite similar with one another, particularly in terms of engine, gearboxes and differentials. However, the four-door New Class models slightly shared in terms of parts and design with the two-door models.
New Class models include the four-door 1500, 1800, and 1600, the two-door 1600, the 2000C/CS, the four-door 2000, the famous two-door 2002, the 1502 and the 1802. Although quite similar, each of these models has distinctive features from each another. For example, the BMW 2000 sedan which was introduced a year after the 2000C, is an upscale version of the 18000. It displayed a different wide taillights, had additional exterior trim and unique rectangular headlights, except for those 2000 sedans that were sold in British market, as the use of rectangular headlights are prohibited there. Nevertheless, a distinct grille with four separate round headlights was offered instead.
Moreover, the BMW 2000 was said to be the best performing 2-liter sedan in the market, and had the best handling and best riding capabilities, as pronounced by the Road & Track magazine. Available also are the models called 2000TI (with twin Solex sidedraft carburetors, more luxurious 2000tilux, first fuel injected model 2000tii.
