Audi 80 vehicles, which were made from 1972 until 1995, were two or four-door sedans from Audi. These were made to replace the former Audi 60-90 vehicles. One year after its launching, Volkswagen rebadged it as the Volkswagen Passat; however, the VW came as a fastback or a wagon. The two share the same platform. In the US, Audi 80 was known as Audi Fox and was sold there until 1979. Success was not elusive to Audi that the Audi 80 got the “European Car of the Year” award for 1973, just after it was introduced to the market.
Later in the 70's and 80's, it was sold as the Audi 4000 in North America. An upmarket version, the Audi 90, which got a five-cylinder engine was also offered. Both the Audi 80 and the upgraded version got a four-wheel drive system in 1983. Audi 80 cars produced from the late 1980s had a distinct aerodynamic look and a body made of galvanized bodyshell. They have been upgraded and restyled for better driving performance and sporty feel. For the 1990 and 1991 car models, Audi 90’s five-cylinder 20 valve engine was offered. It gained a refreshed look and a new designation, which is the Audi B series in the following year. The highest profile car among the B-series is the Audi Cabriolet, which Princess Diana herself once owned.
From its early beginnings, Audi has made excellent contributions such as the use of front wheel drive, rotary-piston, two-stroke engine, and 8-cylinder engines, production of light weight automobiles and aerodynamic auto designs. Numerous Audi cars have also made it big in the auto industry. In 1927, Horch had already made an 8-cylinder sport Cabriolet, which were two-seat two-door open cars. One of the best designed cars in the early 20th century is the Type 853. This was also the first Horch vehicle that got a 5 l straight-eight engine and double-pivot rear axle. Audi also boasts of its first-class sports car, the Wanderer W 25 K, which was equipped with a 2 L six cylinder 85-hp engine.
