Audi 5000 cars refer to Audi 100 C2 and C3 models that were sold in the United States until 1984. The Audi 5000 or the Audi C2 or C3 was a mid-size coupe and was recognized as the "Car of the Year" in Europe in 1983. It had a remarkable aerodynamic look that superseded the boxy car looks of the 70's, setting the trends for new cars in the 1980's. It had been a controversial car, having been erroneously reported as unsafe due to an "unintended acceleration" case. On the contrary, the NHTSA told that it had the lowest fatality rate among the cars in US during those times.
The Audi 100 series were produced from 1968 and lasted in the market until 1994. They were classified into four major divisions, which are based on the type of platform they are carrying. First set of Audi 100s, which lasted till 1976, used a C1 platform. These vehicles, two and four-door sedans and Audi 100 Coupe S, were the largest Audi cars after Audi got back into the scene when Volkswagen took over its ownership in 1964. The second series had a C2 platform and got a more modern styling and the first five cylinder engine. A luxurious version with a turbo charged model option, designated as the Audi 200, was launched in 1980, four years before the new generation Audi was launched.
From 1983 down to 1991, Audi 100 cars carried a C3 platform. These include the Audi 5000, first produced with the C2 vehicles. However, Audi eventually dropped the Audi 5000 designation after the controversy it had experienced. In 1989, it was marketed in the US also as Audi 100. At the end of the decade, a turbocharged version was introduced, the Audi V8. This was actually Audi 200 Quattro vehicles that had the qualities of VW Golf and GTI engines. The fourth class of Audi 100s, renamed as Audi A6 came out in 1991 until 1997. These were greatly restyled and modified vehicles.
