Audi prides itself with a reach heritage of superior auto engineering, which dates from 1899 when August Horch established the A. Horch & Cie company. The first Horch vehicle was introduced in 1901, carrying a horizontal engine with additional vibration-absorbing pistons. Horch made a remarkable contribution to the auto industry by coming up with the first engine with alloy crankcase. After the first car, the company’s production soon expanded, which led to the joint venture with the Motorwagen-Werke AG in 1904.
In 1909, Horch left the company because of a misunderstanding with the supervisory board He later created another company yet still using the Horch name for the vehicles, which furthered the dispute between him and his former company. Horch, which is a German name for “Listen,” instead used Audi, a Latin translation of his name. Audi cars were famous for their performance and reliability. These vehicles even bested other big names in the auto industry in races and sports events. In 1911, Horch won one of the most prestigious races during those times, the International Austrian Alpine Run, using an Audi vehicle. This victory inspired him to create an Audi team for the succeeding races, which it consistently won.
The Audi 200 was among Audi’s historical models, launched in 1980. It was the luxurious and upgraded version of Audi’s renowned mid-size Audi 100 cars. The Audi 200 like those Audi vehicles produced from 1976, were based on a C2 platform. In 1983, C3 platform Audi (sold as the Audi 5000 in United States) replaced the old models but the Audi 200 continued until the next year. Audi also offered a turbocharged version of the Audi 200, the Quattro. It was the first European all-wheel drive passenger car brought to the US market. With the 4WD Quattro, Audi has distinguished itself as a leader in producing technologically advanced cars. The first model produced got a prefix “Ur” derived from the German word for original, setting it apart from other Audi 4WD vehicles also carrying the Quattro name.
