Early windshields were made of ordinary window glasses that could lead to serious injuries in case of an accident. The toughened glass replaced as the material for the windshield and fitted using a rubber or neoprene seal. Because this material shattered into many harmless fragments upon impact, even a small one at that, it became quite a problem so a new material has to be used. This led to the development of the laminated glass windows to be used for the windshield.

It is used primarily to protect the driver and passengers from the wind and to protect the passengers in case of a roll-over accident. Vintage cars used windshield that can be folded down the hood but nowadays windshields are firmly and securely attached to the weatherstrip that has inner and outer grooves that hold the laminated glass and the metal rim, respectively. The laminated glass that is now being used for the windshield is not all glass but rather it has a plastic cover that serves as the protective barrier that prevents the glass from breaking into pieces and hurting the occupants.
The laminated glass used for the windshield does not crack and breaks into pieces but it shatters or cracks upon impact but remains together so it produces a "spider web" cracking on the glass pane as long as a sharp object does not pierce the glass pane. The interlayer made of a Polyvinyl butyral (or PVB) holds the glass between 2 or more layers of glass. The interlayer keeps the glass bonded together. The laminated safety glass is attached with an automotive grade urethane which is primarily chosen for automobiles. Then the windshield is glued to the window frame.
