Ford Wheel Bearing Hub

Even in your wildest imagination you would not allow yourself to be caught dead driving your Ford with its wheels locked on the ground or running ahead of you. Not funny, isn’t it? So make sure that every time your drive your car, the wheel bearing hub is in perfect condition.

Wheel bearings are part of the vehicle’s suspension system. Wheel bearings are responsible for allowing the wheels to rotate with minimal friction aside from supporting the vehicle’s weight. To make sure that the wheel bearing hub is in perfect condition the seals must be leak-free to keep the lubricant inside the bearings and to keep away contaminants. The most common of all the wheel bearings is the ball bearings and the one used in the hub assemblies of the cars are of the “tapered roller” type.

Supporting thousands of pounds while running through thousands of miles is indeed a tough job for the wheel bearing hub. Although wheel bearings are designed to last long, it will wear down over time. Also, premature failure of wheel hub bearings can occur due to wrong adjustment and contaminated or loss of grease. The seal which is the most vulnerable part of the wheel bearing when damaged allows grease to leak out of the bearings. Eventually, the dirt and water will enter the bearing cavity and will result to a total wheel bearing hub failure.

Earlier design of wheel bearing is made up of two pieces, one on the hub spindle and the other within the drum or rotor of the brake assembly. Later designs made the bearings an independent unit bolted to the lower strut where the drive shaft joins the outer wheel assembly. In a sealed bearing assembly, when the seal failed the entire hub must be replaced but on serviceable bearings, the seal can be replaced with a new one.
