Does a car exhibiting frequent oil leaks sound exciting and stylish to
you? Of course not! The same is true with vans, trucks and
sport/utility vehicles having the same kind of problem. No matter how
elegant a vehicle is, even if it is completely customized with a body
kit and various other body accessories, it will be looked down upon if
it leaves a large spot of oil spill on the space from where it was
parked. Oil leaks would always give the impression of rotten components
under the hood of one's vehicle.
So where are all these oil spills coming from and what causes
them to happen? Oil leaks may emanate from a lot of vehicle components
although the usual culprits for these spills are the valve cover and
the valve cover gasket. The valve cover is the long lid that bolts onto
a vehicle's cylinder head and covers the various valve train
components. Traditionally made from metal, many modern vehicles are now
using plastic or composite materials for valve covers, saving them from
corrosions that would usually cause the leaks. The valve cover gasket,
on the other hand, is the sealant that keeps the valve cover tight.
Valve cover gaskets are usually cork gaskets, rubber gaskets or a
combination of both materials.
As we have mentioned in this article, valve covers were traditionally
made only from metals. This makes valve covers prone to corrosion, the
usual cause of leaks on its surface. But even the plastic and composite
valve covers are also prone to damages like warping or deformation due
to the heat in the engine compartment. And even if there is no damage
on the actual valve cover, oil may still spill out of an old valve
cover gasket, especially if it is made of cork that becomes brittle and
breaks as it grows older.
To avoid those nasty oil spills and leaks, it is important
that you give the valve cover and its gaskets a regular check. Small
leaks on the valve cover may be repaired with the help of a mechanic,
although heavy leaks or rusty valve covers would call for a
replacement. If the valve cover gasket is the cause of the leaks,
tightening the cover bolts would usually solve the problem, although it
is generally recommended that you also replace the valve cover gaskets
if it is already old.
