But what is a trunk lid? Well, this thing refers to the sheet metal body panel, which covers the trunk. There are two sheets of metal that are being pressed to shape and held together by a hemming fold lap joint. This overlap may appear to be filled with mastic, but this mastic is usually applied after pressing. The job of the mastic is to impede the electro paint and topcoats on the raw edges of the metal overlap from breaking down and initiate the initial spots of corrosion.

Trunk lids comes in various trunk lid moldings but the most common are carbon fiber trunk lids and fiberglass trunk lids. Carbon fiber trunk lids are much lighter compared to others, therefore they are easy to customize. Whereas fiberglass trunk lids are stiff and nonflammable composite fabric that uses resins to make auto components like body panels.
