In an automobile engine, like the Rolls Royce engine, timing is more important than horsepower or torque. Without proper timing, mechanical work is impossible. Timing is very crucial in the firing of the sparkplugs as well as in the opening and closing of the exhaust valves. The sparkplugs should fire in sequence in order for the pistons to correctly drive the crankshaft. Piston movements are alternating – when one piston is in close position, the next piston is in open position and so on. Hence, the firing sequence of the sparkplugs should also be alternating. The correct timing in the firing sequence is made possible by the distributor. The distributor is a switch mechanism that controls the firing sequence. It has a rotor and a distributor cap. In a Rolls Royce distributor, the rotor is synchronized with the crankshaft. The Roll Royce timing belt, on the other hand, is responsible for coordinating the opening and closing of the exhaust valves in perfect timing with the firing of the sparkplugs.
Typically, the Rolls Royce timing belt is manufactured from rubber material. Although rubber is less durable than steel chain, rubber is the most preferred material because it is noiseless, unlike steel chain. Rubber is also flexible, which allows it to be more responsive to tensile and stress forces produced by engine vibrations. Timing belt present in both gasoline and diesel engines. The main role of the timing belt is to reduce the spin of the crankshaft by half so that the camshaft that operates the exhaust valves can spin half the speed of the crankshaft. Another function of the timing belt is to drive the water pump of the radiator. Timing belt is a simple relay component that transmits the rotational motion of the crankshaft to camshaft.
Heat and mechanical exhaustion cause the timing belt to crack and become brittle. Other factors such as acidic contamination can cause the early deterioration of the timing belt. Worn-out timing belts tend to be loose. Hence, the spin of the crankshaft cannot be correctly coordinated with the opening and closing of the exhaust valves. Consequently, this will result in the lost of power.
