The correct timing in the firing sequence is made possible by the distributor. The distributor is a switch mechanism that controls the firing sequence. It has a rotor and a distributor cap. In a Rolls Royce distributor, the rotor is synchronized with the crankshaft. The Roll Royce timing belt, on the other hand, is responsible for coordinating the opening and closing of the exhaust valves in perfect timing with the firing of the sparkplugs.

Typically, the Rolls Royce timing belt is manufactured from rubber material. Although rubber is less durable than steel chain, rubber is the most preferred material because it is noiseless, unlike steel chain. Consequently, this will result in the lost of power.
