The role of the MG timing belt in your vehicle is to turn the camshaft at exactly ½ the speed of the crankshaft while maintaining a precise alignment. The engine will have at least one crankshaft or as many as four crankshafts among some of the V type engines. The camshaft causes the intake and the exhaust valves to open and then close in time with the pistons, which move up and down on the cylinders.
Technically speaking, the timing belt is the driving link that is found between the camshaft and the vehicle’s crankshaft. The primary function of this part is to operate the engine valves via the camshaft, and can also fulfill the additional role of driving the coolant pump. There are two types of engines that use timing belts - the interference engines and the non-interference engines. The difference between the two lies in the proximity between the valves and the pistons. Among vehicles with interference engines, the piston can crash into an open valve and can cause serious engine damage by bending the valves and breaking the pistons the moment the timing belt slips even one notch. For the non-interference engines, the engine will not normally self-destruct. However, in either case, the engine will immediately shut down if the belt fails.
There are a number of vehicle engines with overhead camshafts having the timing belt, with a limited life span. Most manufacturers adopt the belt instead of the more durable chain since the chains are a lot noisier and may cost more to manufacture. Generally, most timing belts can be replaced after 60,000 miles to every 105,000 miles. You may also get a more precise figure by checking your MG manual.
The timing belt may fail without warning among some vehicles, and they are hard to diagnose and to change. The only course of action for you is to just follow the recommended interval for changing the timing belt. A timing belt replacement may not necessarily be cheap, but it is nonetheless cheaper than the alternative. This is one reason why being a pro-active driver pays off. You do not have to wait for the part to fail on you; you take steps to ensure the continuous function of the belt. Having your replacement timing belt is even made easier, thanks to Parts Train.
