Your Hummer timing belt functions by turning the camshaft(s) at precisely ˝ the speed of the crankshaft while maintaining exact alignment.  Your engine can have from one up to four camshafts.  Camshafts make the intake and exhaust vales open and close in time with pistons that move up and down in their cylinders.  The two engine types that use timing belts are interference and non-interference engines.  The only difference between the two engines is the proximity between the valves and pistons.  If your timing belt slips and you have an interference engine, you could end up with some serious engine damage.  Although a non-interference engine won’t be as severely damaged by a timing belt slip, both the interference and non-interference engines will need a new timing belt.  A broken timing belt will leave you stranded.  To prevent this from happening, make sure you change your timing belt at the recommended mileage found in your owner’s manual.
