The Volvo tie rod specifically serves as a steering linkage, particularly connecting the center link to the steering knuckle on vehicles having conventional suspension systems and recirculating ball steering gears. While on vehicles having MacPherson strut suspension and rack-and-pinion gears, the tie rod couples the end of the rack into the steering knuckle. It also provides an efficient pivot support on the steering knuckle and to various hinge mechanisms.

The tie rod is composed of the inner and outer tie rod ends. The inner tie rod end is firmly mounted to either ends of the center link which provides a pivot point for the steering gear. On the other hand, the outer tie rod end couples with an adjusting sleeve. This allows the length of the tie rod to be adjustable, allowing it to set the vehicle’s toe, which is a critical alignment angle. It is also connected to the steering knuckle which allows the front wheels to turn.

Although most of the time the tie rod serves to be reliable, over time, its wear is unavoidable. A worn out tie rod can affect the entire steering mechanism. It can cause your vehicle to wander, steer erratically, and uneven tire wear. When replacing the tie rod, it is also necessary to have a complete wheel alignment since replacing it disturbs the toe setting. For best results, have it done by a qualified service mechanic.
