Steering a vehicle is may seem simple and effortless to the driver. However, the actual mechanical process of steering is a bit more complicated that it seems. Steering involves the translation of motion and the amplification of input force. It involves a series of different steering components working in synchrony. The Merkur tie rod is just one of the many steering components in a Merkur car. A tie rod is a tensile component capable of pulling resistance but incapable of pushing resistance. It connects the steering rack and the steering arm or knuckle. When the steering rack moves, it pulls the tie rods connected to its ends. In turn, the tie rods pull the steering arm or knuckle, causing the front wheels to turn to the direction where they are steered.

Tie rods like the Merkur tie rod are important steering components. They are partly responsible for the stability and coordination of the front wheels during steering. If the tie rods are loose or too tight, the front wheels will not be very responsive. They may even become too jerky when encountering bumps on the road. Maintaining appropriate tensile force is important in effective steering. The tie rods stabilize the steering knuckles so that it will not haphazardly sway on either side when the car is running. Steering is not only about vehicle maneuvers, it is also about stable steering components.

Stable steering components allow your vehicle to optimize the engine output. Unstable steering components will result in the loss of traction and reduction of power. When you turn the steering wheel, its rotational motion is transmitted by the steering shaft to the steering pinion. The steering pinion is a toothed gear attached to the other end of the steering shaft. The teeth of the pinion are interlocked with the teeth of the steering rack. The interlocking teeth allow the two components to move in synchrony. The steering rack is perpendicular to the front wheels when the front wheels are in forward position, in line with the rear wheels of the vehicle.

Since the steering rack moves only sideways, it translates the rotational motion of the pinion into linear motion. By moving sideways, the steering rack pulls the tie rods that are connected to the steering knuckle of the vehicle. When the tie rods pull the steering knuckle, the front wheels turn to the direction where they are being steered. However, the front wheels are not perfectly parallel with each other during steering. The inner front wheel has more acute angle than the outer front wheel. On the other hand, the outer wheel sweeps greater arc than the inner wheel. You can find the most reliable and durable tie rod here at Parts Train.
