Mercury Tie Rod |
The high performance of an automobile must be complemented with drivability and controllability for it to attain an overall efficiency. If the engine is the heart of the performance of your Mercury, the suspension system is its counterpart when it comes to drivability. The suspension system, just like the engine system, comprises of many more parts than you could ever imagine. It is designed with a basic concept, and that is to attain high performance. One of the important internal parts of your Mercury’s suspension system is the Mercury tie rod.
The tie rod is a slender structural rod used as a tie between the center link and the steering knuckles for conventional suspension system and recirculating ball steering gears models. Among models equipped with MacPherson strut suspension and rack and pinion steering systems, the tie rods connect the end of the rack to the steering knuckle. Like any other automobile tie rods, the Mercury tie rod consists of an inner and outer ends. The outer end is connected to an adjusting sleeve that allows setting a ‘vehicle toe.’
The vehicle toe is the critical alignment angle of the auto as to the adjustments allowed by the adjusting sleeve to the length of the tie rod. The purpose of the Mercury tie rod in your vehicle is to transmit the force from the steering center link (for a conventional suspension system and recirculating ball gears) or from the rack gear (for MacPherson strut and rack and pinion steering systems) to the steering knuckle, which causes the wheels to turn and get you to your destination at any time, any day.
Mercury tie rods must be checked on a regular basis, like at least once a year, plus a complete wheel alignment for continued performance. This must be done in an increasing pattern as your vehicle ages. Failure of the tie rods can cause erratic, wandering, and excessive tire wear, which will not only subject you to bigger expenditures but also to possible deadly accidents. Once you see any irregularity in your auto’s tie rods, consult a qualified service mechanic. If it will need replacing, you will also have your wheels aligned as it will disturb the toe setting.
