Tie rods like the Maserati tie rod are important components of the steering system of an automobile. Tie rods are tensile components that can pull but cannot push. Tie rod are located on either ends of the steering rack. Each tie rod is connects one end of the steering rack to the steering arm. When the steering rack moves, the tie rods pull the steering arms. The steering arms serve as pivots for the front wheels. Automobile steering is much complicated than it appears to be. Steering is actually about motion conversion and force amplification. When your turn the steering wheel of your vehicle, you are actually transmitting your effort via a series of steering components. The steering wheel itself is a type of lever that amplifies input force of the muscles of your arms.

Force is amplified by the steering wheel through the simple principle of mechanical advantage. The diameter of the steering wheel serves the as length of the lever while the center of steering wheel serves as the fulcrum. Hence, the larger the steering wheel, the greater is the mechanical advantage. However, there is only a limit to the size of the steering wheel. Practicality and aesthetic sense limit the size of the steering wheel. A bigger steering wheel is not only bulky, it is also very unattractive. Thus, other means are necessary to amplify the input force and minimize resistance.

One way of minimizing resistance is through lubrication. The steering shaft is well lubricated by petroleum grease. Lubrication effectively reduces the resistance due to friction. At the end of the steering shaft is a toothed pinion that is locked with the teeth of the steering rack. The rotational or arc motion of the steering wheel is transmitted by the steering shaft to the pinion. As the pinion rotates, the locked teeth of the steering rack allow the rack to move on either side with reference to the teeth of the pinion. The sideway motion of the steering rack pulls the tie rods.

In turn, the tie rods pull the steering arms, which then pull the front wheels. During steering the front wheels are not perfectly parallel. This is facilitated by the slight difference in the pull of the tie rods. The interior wheel serves as pivot; hence, its angle is more acute than the exterior wheel. On the other hand, the exterior wheel covers larger arc compared to the interior wheel. This allows the vehicle to be effectively steered. Defective tie rods may drastically affect steering. Replacing defective tie rods with high-quality aftermarket replacements is easy if you shop here at Parts Train.
