Steering a vehicle is simple and almost effortless. However, the mechanism involved is not as simple as you think it is. Steering involves both motion conversion and effort amplification. When we speak about motion conversion in steering we refer to the conversion of rotary motion of the steering wheel to linear motion of the steering rack. In turn, the linear motion of the steering rack is converted into arc motion of the front wheels. When you turn the steering wheel of your vehicle, the rotational motion of the steering wheel is transmitted to the steering shaft. The steering shaft has a pinion on its end which is connected to the steering rack. The pinion teeth are locked with the teeth of the steering rack. Since the steering rack can only move sideways, the rotational or arc motion of the pinion is translated into the sideway or linear motion of the steering rack. Tie rods are connected to either sides of the steering rack.
Tie rods such as the Lincoln tie rod are tension rods. This means that their participation in the steering process is mainly through pulling. When the steering rack moves sideways, it pulls the steering rods. The steering rods are connected to the steering arms of the front wheels. The steering arms serve as pivots for the front wheels. The steering arms pull the front wheels to change the direction of the vehicle. However, the angles of the interior and exterior wheels during steering are slightly different. The interior wheel angle, serving as pivot, is more acute than the exterior wheel which forms a larger arc.
Force amplification is also involved in the steering mechanism. The steering wheel itself is a type of lever. The diameter of the steering wheel represents the length of the lever. On the other hand, the center pivot of the steering wheel represents the fulcrum. Bearings in the steering shaft minimize frictional resistance. The grease lubricants in the steering shaft and the steering rack also achieve the same purpose. There are also vehicles which uses power steering. This type of steering utilizes hydraulic mechanisms to amplify the input force. Input force is also amplified via the teeth of the pinion and rack.
Steering gives the driver direct control over the vehicle direction. It allows the driver to maneuver the vehicle. Steering determines the responsiveness of the vehicle in evading obstacles and potential accidents. Stability in steering is as important as engine performance. Without a stable steering, the vehicle would be very jerky and will be very uncomfortable to ride. Steering rods are partly responsible for stable steering.
