The Kia tie rod is a long metal part of the vehicle’ steering system that basically connects the key parts of the steering mechanism together. It connects the center link of the steering system to the steering knuckle on most conventional suspension systems with the use of re-circulating steering ball gears. The steering wheel passes the movement to the rack and pinion unit, which in turn delivers the said motion into the tie rod and eventually to the spindle of your wheels. The rack and pinion gears are only used on a McPherson suspension system, with which the tie rod works to connect both ends of the rack to the steering knuckle. Typically, there are two kinds of tie rods used in this system, the left and the right tie rods.
The main purpose of the tie rod is to transmit the torque or force from the steering center link or the rack and pinion unit to the steering knuckle, which in turn enables the wheels to move either left or right depending on the movement of the steering wheel. Both tie rods connected to the steering knuckle possesses an adjusting sleeve that basically allows the whole length of the tie rod to be adjustable, so to respond according to the direction of the steering wheel.
Proper care and periodic checking of the condition of your tie rod is vital as this is particular auto parts must be readily replaced when severely damaged. If the tie rod of your Kia suffers a complete failure while cruising on highways or even riding around the city streets, the wheel could in fact get separated from the vehicle, a headache indeed. And worse, the incident can put lives at risk, especially when running at a very dangerous place. Detecting defects in the tie rod earlier is then the best thing to avoid such maladies.
Since both the suspension and steering system work together for efficient vehicle performance, checking these two annually along with a wheel alignment is recommended. A worn out tie rod can cause the performance of your steering and suspension components to be compromised as it results to unpredictable steering response, excessive and uneven tire wear, and wandering of wheels. Replace your problematic Kia tie rod immediately.
