Jeep Tie Rod |
Your Jeep tie rod is a vital contraption in your car, van, truck, or SUV’s suspension and steering mechanism to keep your wheels well coordinated with the steering wheel. Aside from the tie rod, you can also find the shafts, tie rod ends, wheels, steering rack that functions altogether as relevant components for both mechanism. To keep its lifelong performance, however, periodic maintenance is the key. Wear and tear can cause damage to various parts and the tie rod is no exception. When replacement is definite, you can try to opt for in the various automotive stores.
The tie rods are primarily intended for the use in steering linkage, steering knuckle pivot supports, and other pivot mechanisms. On vehicles with conventional suspension system, they connect the center link to the steering knuckle of the wheels. They are situated at both ends of the steering rack to allow the wheels to turn whenever the steering wheel rotates at the exact same rate. The constant bustle from both the suspension and steering system subjects the tie rod to continuous pressure. Hence, tie rods are made durable enough to withstand such conditions and to function for longer periods of time.
Servicing the suspension system, the tie rod can be adjusted to match the specific description of the suspension. The tie rod transfers the force from the steering rack to the steering knuckle that creates the movement of the vehicle wheels. The tie rod is composed of an inner and outer end. Both ends are connected via a device called sleeve. To be specific, the outer end which is connected to the steering knuckle is responsible for the movement of the front wheels. The inner end, on the other hand, is the one mounted to the center link as pivot point to the steering gear. Together with the tie rod, the ball joints allow the well coordinated movement of the steering wheel and vehicle wheels.
One sign of deteriorating tie rods is when abnormal wear patterns on the tires starts to appear. In addition, wandering, erratic steering, and clunking sound from the front wheels are also signs of possibly damaged tie rods. Operating with broken tie rod is dangerous and presents some peril. Not only do the tires wear excessively, control of the vehicle will get harder.
