The series of movement starts with the worm gear that is mounted on the gearbox. It is linked to a sector gear that is a part of the Pitman arm. On the opposite end of the Pitman arm is an idler arm that moves simultaneously with it. The movement causes the center link to move side by side and this is transferred to the tie rod ends. In return the tie rod ends facilitate the movement of the steering arms, enabling the wheels to rotate.

Meanwhile, a rack and pinion steering system does away with a worm gear and uses a pinion gear instead. This square gear is composed of a rack that is covered with teeth all around. It moves in the same direction of the steering wheel. The rack is an alternative to the center link and idler arm that was used in the convenient steering system. The inner and outer tie rod ends connect the tie rods to the opposite ends of the rack.
