Don't you just love how your Geo vehicle glides down on the highway like a smooth machine that is made especially for those tight corners? The handling and navigation of a vehicle depends largely on its steering system. If your compact car starts to steer like a bus the problem could be a damaged Geo tie rod. If it is beyond repair it could cause a late response of the front wheels in connection with the operation of the steering wheel. Therefore the wheels do not immediately go to the left or right direction when you turn the steering wheel that way.

The tie rod is major component of the steering assembly and forms the connection between the center link and the steering knuckle. It transmits motion that was created in the front axle to other parts of the car's steering system. In a conventional steering system, the tie rods can be found on the opposite sides of the center link and linked to the tie rod ends. The series of movement starts with the worm gear that is mounted on the gearbox. It is linked to a sector gear that is a part of the Pitman arm. On the opposite end of the Pitman arm is an idler arm that moves simultaneously with it. The movement causes the center link to move side by side and this is transferred to the tie rod ends. In return the tie rod ends facilitate the movement of the steering arms, enabling the wheels to rotate.

Meanwhile, a rack and pinion steering system does away with a worm gear and uses a pinion gear instead. This square gear is composed of a rack that is covered with teeth all around. It moves in the same direction of the steering wheel. The rack is an alternative to the center link and idler arm that was used in the convenient steering system. The inner and outer tie rod ends connect the tie rods to the opposite ends of the rack.

The Geo tie rod is an important component of the steering assembly that is responsible for keeping down the bumps and impacts caused by bad road conditions. It is subjected to the daily grind of changing weather conditions that cause it to be worn out. Get a replacement if you notice drifting, excessive tire wear, and unsteady handling.
