The Fiat brand is a line of automobile under the Fiat Group. It shares the same expert professionals and engineers with such well-known brands as Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari. They received the accolade of being named European car of the Year for a record eleven times over the past 40 years. It is a truly magnificent feat that was achieved through hard work and superior engineering. So the next time you drive a Fiat pay close attention to the steering and suspension of the car. They are one of the advantages of Fiat over other brands. One of the important parts of the steering system is the Fiat tie rod.

A tie rod or a tie bar is structural element that supports connected members, in the case of automobiles, the center link and the steering knuckle. It is a metal bar that transmits movement to the front axle in various types of vehicle steering system. In order to understand the function of the tie rods, it is best to take a close look at the two types of steering system — the conventional steering system and the rack and pinion steering system.

A conventional steering system contains a gearbox that is equipped with a worm gear. The gear is at the end of the steering column and engaged to a sector gear that is attached to the Pitman arm. Across the Pitman arm is the idler arm which copies the movement of the Pitman arm. This movement is what causes the center link to move sideways. The tie rods are placed on equal sides of the center link and connected to the tie rod ends. The tie rod ends are fixed to the steering arms and is the last series of movement that is responsible for the turning of the wheels.

Compared to the convenient steering system, the rack and pinion steering system uses a pinion gear instead of a worm gear. It is a square-shaped gear that interlocks with a rack that has teeth on its entire length. When you turn the steering wheel it moves to the same direction. The rack is also a replacement for the idler arm and the center link. The tie rods are attached to both ends of the rack by means of the outer or inner tie rod ends.

A damaged tie rod can cause you car to have extreme tire wear, drifting, and unmanageable steering. You can get Fiat tie rod replacements at Parts Train.
