The word suspension has lots of meaning. But when it comes to automotive technology, suspension means the part of the vehicle that attaches the wheels to the vehicle's body. Suspension significantly controls ride quality and handling. It keeps the wheel connected to the ground and at the same time isolates the vehicle occupants from road noise, bumps, vibrations and other undesirable things.

The most popular types of vehicle suspension at present are the independent front and rear suspensions. In this type of suspension system, each wheel can move independently without affecting the other wheel. But each suspension has advantages over the other. The independent front suspension enhances driver control on rough surfaces and thus gives good handling and a more comfortable ride. On the other hand, the independent rear suspension significantly reduces body roll and at the same time keeps the vehicle's weight balanced. This means that vehicle's tendency to bend down in the rear during acceleration or lurch forward when braking is also reduced or totally avoided.

Suspension length also matters. There are drivers who want lowered suspension while some prefer longer ones. Lowered suspension are usually intended for vehicles inclined in speed and racing while longer suspensions are designed for performance vehicles such as trucks and other off-road automobiles. An increase in vehicle's suspension travel means boost in the vehicle's ride and handling, both on and off-road. And since the tire is more capable of getting in touch with the road surface even in extreme conditions, a vehicle with greater suspension travel gives better traction too.
