Independent suspension improves traction and torque of the wheels because it frees the wheels from excess suspension loads. Excess suspension loads are distributed carried by other suspension components. A strut is actually an integrated suspension unit comprised of spring and shock absorber. The integration of two suspension components into one unit allows simpler and more efficient automobile designs. Struts are commonly used as replacement for the wishbone type of suspension. Hence, struts are standard suspension components of monocoque or unibody type of automobiles.

Typically, a strut is comprised of a coil over spring, which is a torsion spring, and a shock absorber, which is pneumatically operated. The coil over spring allows the rebound of the compressive force while the shock absorber cushions the vertical acceleration of the vehicle. The compressive force of the suspension load and vibrations is absorbed by the shock absorber through compressing a gas and oil inside the cylinder. On the other hand, the rebound is made possible by the coil over spring. This allows the vehicle chassis to maintain a stable level of elevation relative to the ground.
