There may be nothing wrong with a little "bump n' grind", just as R. Kelly would suggest in his song. A lot of it, however, would be dreadful, especially when experienced while driving a vehicle on an extremely rough road. Bumps and grinding noises from underneath your vehicle can cause extreme discomfort. Good thing for Buick owners, such things are not expected to happen while they are driving their vehicles. Buick vehicles are equipped with excellent suspension systems made up of parts that are proven to last long without making all those grinding noises.
Buick suspension systems are equipped with nothing but the best suspension system parts in order for them to perform well. Some of these parts are the control arms, shock absorbers, coil springs, and leaf springs. Not all Buick suspensions, however, are equipped with the same parts. In most modern Buick vehicles, for example, one can only find two upper control arms instead of the usual four. The other two control arms are usually replaced with Buick struts which are special suspension components specifically designed for special suspension systems.
Buick struts are used on Buick vehicles with a MacPherson strut front suspension or other suspension systems of related architecture. Basically, these components are shock absorbers mounted inside coil springs. Like shock absorbers, struts are also designed primarily to dampen the erratic movement of suspension springs. Aside from the dampening function, however, struts are also designed to provide structural support to the suspension. Particularly, struts are designed to support sideway loads that are not along its axis of compression, thus eliminating the need for upper control arms in front suspension systems.
Aside from shock absorbers and coil springs, strut assemblies are also made up of other smaller components. Basically, these additional components are designed to attach the strut unit to the vehicle's suspension system. One of these parts is the upper pivot which attaches the strut to the fenderwell. Another is the lower arm which attaches the unit to the wheel's spindle. Together, all of these components make up a whole strut assembly.
