Suspension systems are made up of many different parts, among the more popular of which are the shock absorbers, control arms, coil springs, leafs and others. However, not all types of suspension system are equipped with the same parts. Instead, some special types of suspension system would replace one particular part with another. In modern Toyota front suspension systems, for example, you usually won't find upper control arms. Instead, these components are replaced by the more versatile Toyota struts.

Toyota struts are front suspension system components that can be found on most modern Toyota vehicles. Basically, these components were designed to control unwanted spring motions through a process called dampening, much like what a shock absorber would do. Unlike shock absorbers, however, struts are also designed to provide structural support for the vehicle suspension. Struts also have the ability to support sideways loads not along its axis of compression, thus allowing manufacturers to eliminate the upper control arms in front suspension systems.

Now, all of these functions cannot be performed by a single, stand-alone component. Toyota struts, therefore, are made up of several smaller parts. Typically, a strut would be made up of a shock absorber unit mounted inside a coil spring. This unit would be attached to the fenderwell with an upper pivot and to the spindle with a lower arm. All of these components need to function well in order for the strut to perform all of its functions properly. So should any of the components incur damages, it is important that the strut assembly be replaced immediately.
