Your Mini vehicle in motion is more than just wheels turning. Along with it is the suspension system that is in dynamic state of balance compensating continuously and adjusting for different driving conditions. As a basic knowledge, the suspension system performs vital functions. It maintains the right vehicle ride alignment height, reduces the effect of shock forces, keeps the correct wheel alignment, supports the vehicle weight, keeps the tires in contact with the road, and finally controls the vehicle’s direction of travel.
These functions are however realized when the components of the suspension system are in good condition. The modern suspension system is composed of main parts such as the shocks absorbers, springs, tires, and the struts. The Mini struts are major structural parts that take the place of the upper control arm and upper ball joint that are used in conventional suspension systems. Basically, they perform two major functions. First, they perform a damping task like the shocks. Yes, internally struts are like shock absorbers. They are velocity-sensitive which implies that they vary so that the amount of resistance can increase or decrease depending on how fast the suspension moves.
Another function of the struts is to provide structural support for the vehicle suspension. They support the spring and hold the tire in an aligned position. Moreover, they bear much of the side load that is placed on the vehicle suspension. In effect, the struts affect the riding comfort, the handling, as well as the vehicle control, braking, steering, wheel alignment and wear on other suspension components such as the tires. Note that typical struts are composed of a coil spring to support the vehicle’s weight, strut housing to provide rigid support to the assembly, and a damping unit within the strut housing to take control of the spring and suspension movements.
The bottom of the strut body is attached to the steering knuckle that connects to a lower control arm through the lower ball joint. On the other hand, the top of the strut is attached to the vehicle body through the upper strut mount or sometimes called a bearing plate.
