Some people, when riding an automobile, may wonder why even if they go on or pass through a severely rough and rugged terrain, they hardly feel the harshness of the road condition. This is because their vehicle’s suspension is in perfect shape. An automotive suspension is a system of springs, shock absorbers, linkages and supports that connects a vehicle to its wheels. Basically, suspensions serve two functions which include the control of vehicle’s feel called ride quality while traveling, often associated with comfort, and the enhancement of the vehicle’s handling or the ability to turn and to keep traveling in the intended direction even over rough roads.

Quality suspensions must possess high standard on the following important properties: spring rate, travel, damping, camber control, roll center height, flexibility and vibration modes of the suspension elements, isolation from high frequency shock, contribution to unsprung weight and total weight, space, air resistance and cost. Also, a suspension has this component called strut that helps in maintaining the reliability of the function that is expected of it.

The strut like the Ford strut works just like a shock absorber only that it is used with a different type of front suspension. A strut mixes the primary function of a shock absorber as a damper with the ability to help in taking on the weight sideway loads out of its axis of compression, and somewhat similar to a sliding pillar suspension, thus taking away the need for an upper suspension arm. To cut it short, a strut must have a more rugged design, with strong mounting points near its middle for attachment of such loads.

There are two popular kinds of struts, the MacPherson strut which is widely used in modern vehicles and the Chapman strut. These two looks and designed exactly the same, only that the MacPherson is used in front wheels, while the Chapman strut is used in rear wheels. Although some vehicles are equipped with a MacPherson kind of strut in their rear suspension, it still commonly and usually found at the front wherein it provides a steering pivot called kingpin as well as a suspension mounting for the wheels. Struts tend to break down in the course of long use and hard work of carrying a heavy load over and over again.

When looking for quality struts, especially if it is for your Ford automobile, you can browse our comprehensive catalogue for the perfect strut you need. Here at Parts Train, we offer quality automotive products! Try it now.
