That’s basically how it works all in all. The idea of the rack and pinion on the other s that the gear is called pinion gear, and the rack of course is the steering rack. Power steering contains hydraulic pump reinforcement to add up to the force for easier wheel turning.

The usual damage that the steering system gets is usually from natural wear. This includes the cracking or breaking of the steering racks’ teeth because of long time use. Since it is made of metal, these parts are prone to corrosive elements that can in time cause rusting and early deterioration. It must be well greased and properly maintained at all times.
