At the end of the rack is a tie rod that connects each end of the rack to the steering arm.
In a power rack-and-pinion steering, the steering rack has a slightly different construction. The rack has a cylinder with a piston located at the center. The high-pressure fluid flows through the fluid ports located at both sides of the piston. This in turn forces the piston to move, and thus providing power to move the rack, allowing better linkage movement and efficient wheel turn. The recirculating-ball steering, however, does not employ the use of a steering rack. Instead, a recirculating ball gearbox is utilized to aid in the directional movement of the rods and steering arms.
The steering rack eventually wears out at some point in time, usually due to gradual deterioration. In a power rack-and-pinion steering, the steering rack where the fluid flows directly will start to leak when it is already damaged. Likewise, on a standard rack-and-pinion steering, the turn of the steering wheel may not give you the same reaction as compared to before. In such cases, replacing the part is a viable choice.
