When someone is asked about a car’s steering system, the basic idea that comes into his mind is that turning the steering wheel will turn the wheels. However, what lies beyond this basic concept is something that’s a lot more complicated. Aside from the steering wheel, steering shaft, pinion, tie rod, and steering arm, the Peugeot steering rack is another component which enables the wheels to turn to the driver’s desired direction. The steering rack allows the wheels to turn simultaneous to the turning of the steering wheel. If the rack or any other steering part gets worn, the whole process will greatly be affected.

In a rack-and-pinion steering type, the steering rack and other suspension parts are enclosed in a metal tube. At the ends of the rack is a device called tie rod. The steering wheel is connected to the rack via the steering shaft together with the pinion gear that meshes with the teeth of the steering rack. The tie rod in turn connects to the steering arm on the spindle. To explain how these parts work in the operation, let’s start on the steering wheel. Once you turn the steering wheel, the rotational movement is transferred to the pinion gear into the rack. The steering rack takes up the rotational motion to allow the wheels to turn accordingly. In short, the steering rack converts the rotational movement into linear motion necessary for the wheels to turn.

Another function of the steering rack is providing gear reduction when the teeth from the pinion mesh with its teeth, thus making it easier to turn the wheels. On most cars today, steering rack design may also vary particular from its use. The rack-and-pinion steering is the most common type of steering. But aside from it, there is also the recirculating-ball steering, and power steering. The recirculating-ball steering is commonly utilized on trucks and SUVs today. The obvious difference of this type of steering from the rack-and-pinion is the inclusion of worm gear. The power steering, on the other hand, utilizes a pump and a rotary valve.

Because of wear and tear, your steering rack may start to suffer from deterioration. Although having the part repaired by a professional may fix the problem, oftentimes though, a replacement must be installed. And when it comes to the place where products are top-notch, Parts Train is the trusted name.
