The Merkur steering rack is a long piece of metal which is flat on one side containing teeth cut perpendicularly from the rack running the whole length of it. On the ends of this rack a tie rod is connected which is connected to the car’s wheels. The movement of the rack pulls on the tie rods which then indicate to where the wheels should turn, and so forth. To make it more simple, the pinion turns based on your instructions, this then makes the steering rack move left or right, which then causes the tie rods to pull on the direction of the tires.
