Basically, cars are great because it makes going from one place to another very convenient. By turning the ignition on, and with the help of the tires, all we have to do is control the vehicle to our own likings and decision. However, your Merkur cars build up isn’t just a box with wheels and seats inside with the steering wheel to control and pedals to step on; it is actually built up with so many other parts including the engine. The steering system is the one responsible for that ability to have control over the direction to where you want the vehicle to go to.
The steering system is also not the steering wheel alone. Of course being a system only means one thing: there are a few other parts that comprise this that without each one, the whole system just won’t work. The most popular steering system used in most autos of today, and probably Merkur’s as well, is the rack and pinion steering which consists of two major components – a rack and a pinion. The pinion or the pinion shaft is a round rod having teeth parallel to it. To provide the movement, this teeth mesh with the rack’s, and is held at ninety degrees by a collar.
The rack mentioned above, is also known as a steering rack. The Merkur steering rack is a long piece of metal which is flat on one side containing teeth cut perpendicularly from the rack running the whole length of it. On the ends of this rack a tie rod is connected which is connected to the car’s wheels. The movement of the rack pulls on the tie rods which then indicate to where the wheels should turn, and so forth. To make it more simple, the pinion turns based on your instructions, this then makes the steering rack move left or right, which then causes the tie rods to pull on the direction of the tires.
The steering rack of your Merkur is one part that is prone to rusting and wear. After some time of use, the steering rack would need replacing eventually, similar to the rest of your cars parts. Corrosive elements such as water, dirt, and other substances that is present in the environment where the steering rack is exposed to are the probable causes of its deter. To extend the life of your vehicle, and to keep that safe drive, you’re obliged to have your Merkur steering rack replaced when it is asked for.
