Geo Steering Rack

Vehicles today are mostly equipped with rack and pinion steering, which is a setup that has uncomplicated operating designs. The rack and pinion gearset has each end of the rack protruding from the metal tube, where it is enclosed. A Tie rod is linked to each end of the steering rack while a Pinion Gear is connected to the steering shaft. If you try to turn the steering wheel, the pinion gear will spin and the rack will eventually move. The rack and pinion steering has an objective to convert the rotational motion of the steering wheel into a linear motion, which is essential for turning the wheels. Additionally, this type of steering aims to provide a gear reduction for easier turning of wheels.

The set up of your Geo steering rack is simple. It has a rack that is enclosed with a steering pinion. This rack is attached to the steering wheel through the shafts and U-joints. Once the steering wheel is turned, the pinion will force the steering rack to move to either side. The steering rack ends linked to the front wheels permit the turning to any direction. A normal power-assisted steering setup in a conventional steering rack and there is a rack-and-pinion and a stepped hydraulic ram for a dividing plate in the middle. A side of the plate makes use of a small ram, providing twice the area for the fluid. It is important that the large side of the ram is operated with a full system pressure. On the other hand, the small side that keeps the ram must be provided with the half system pressure for better balance. The reason behind this is the lower pressure working on the larger surface area.

Power steering racks utilize the engine-driven pump for high-pressure hydraulic fluid supply that lets the wheel turn. Thus, these racks let big amount of hoses, seals, and o-rings to contain hydraulic fluid. Faulty power steering racks surely manifest leaks and lack of hydraulic fluid, which result to difficult steering. Damaged steering racks must not be taken for granted; it will just cause further damage that will bring imminent danger in driving.
