The rack and pinion steering is often used by modern vehicles. This is a setup for steering that is simple and uncomplicated. The rack and pinion gear set is enclosed in a metal tube, with each end of the rack protruding from it. A tie rod is attached to each end of the steering rack. A Pinion Gear is connected to the steering shaft. Once the steering wheel is turned, such gear spins and the rack moves. Basically, the rack and pinion steering aims to convert the rotational motion of the steering wheel into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels. Further, this type of steering also has an objective to provide a gear reduction to make easier turning of wheels.

Your Ford steering rack is consisted as a rack that is enclosed with a steering pinion. This is connected to the steering wheel through the shafts and U-joints. Turning the steering wheel will allow the pinion to force the steering rack to move either to the left or right. The steering rack ends are linked to the front wheels, which let it turn to any direction. A conventional Steering rack employs a normal power-assisted steering setup, where there is a rack-and-pinion and a stepped hydraulic ram for a dividing plate in the middle. One side of the plate utilizes a small ram that provides twice the area for the fluid. A full system pressure is very important on the large side of the ram. On the other hand, a half system pressure must be provided on the small side to keep the ram perfectly balanced and centered. This is because of the lower pressure that is working on a larger surface area.

A power steering rack has an engine-driven pump for the high-pressure hydraulic fluid supply to the steering rack as the wheel turns. This accommodates easier turning of the steering rack. Power steering racks let the big amount of hoses, seals, and o-rings to contain hydraulic fluid. Defective power steering racks would definitely manifest leaks while the lack of hydraulic fluid would result to difficult steering. Once you realize a simple damage in your steering racks, resort to an immediate replacement.
