In the moment the ignition is released to break the starting circuit after the start of the engine, the solenoid generated magnetic field will be disintegrated even if the returning spring pulls the plunger back to its original position. As a result, the starter motor will be automatically shut off making the starter drive disengage.
In the moment the starter is activated, the forward movement of solenoid plunger will make the shift yoke to move the drive installed at the opposite direction and link the pinion and the flywheel. The pinion will be locked to its shaft through the help of the clutch; although it will be released the moment the engine begins to operate and the flywheel starts to turn faster than the given pace. The pinion meanwhile will be allowed to freely spin until the drive is retracted in order for the clutch to shift; thus providing protection to the motor from getting any damage.
