The measurement of a vehicle’s speed is very important for vehicles used in racing applications. Why? First and foremost, the race car driver would have to constantly check his speedometer to know how fast he is driving and decide whether he can still speed up or not. Then, the various components of a race vehicle, especially the power train and drive train parts, are designed to function in accordance with the vehicle’s speed. Without anything that can measure the vehicle’s speed, the efficiency of the race car parts would definitely be lessened and the performance of the race car driver degrades.
Toyota vehicles are not race vehicles, although there’s nothing that can stop them from speeding up (except traffic rules, of course). But even so, various parts of Toyota vehicles also need a component that can measure speed for them. The anti-lock braking system, for example, needs to measure the vehicle’s speed to determine whether the wheels are locking up or not. Then, the engine has various components whose performance must also speed up as a vehicle starts accelerating. To measure all of these, Toyota vehicles are equipped with Toyota Speed Sensor(s).
Just as its name would imply, a speed sensor is an electronic component that measures the speed of a vehicle. There are two general types of speed sensor: the engine speed sensor and the wheel speed sensor. Engine speed sensors are usually mounted on the engine crankshaft and measures the rotational speed of the crankshaft. This speed is being relayed by the sensor to the engine management ECU computer, which in turn modifies engine functions and initiates diagnostic routines depending on the speed measurement. Wheel speed sensors, on the other hand, are mounted on a wheel’s axle and measures the rotational speed of the wheels. The data gathered by wheel sensors are used by the ABS computer to control the system.
Toyota vehicles that feature an antilock braking system are usually equipped with the two type of speed sensor while those that don’t feature ABS are equipped only with the engine speed sensor. Still, some other ABS-equipped Toyota vehicles would only have the wheel speed sensor, with the engine management computer just getting the measurement it needs from the ABS computer.
But whatever type of speed sensor your Toyota is equipped with, you can be assured that there is always a replacement for them here at Parts Train.
