A Spark Plug is an electrical device that sets through the cylinder head of some internal combustion engines. This is responsible for the ignition of the compressed aerosol gasoline by producing electric sparks. Electricity is driven by the spark plug to arc across one gap that seems to be the bolt of lightning. At extremely high voltage, this electricity flows across the gap and creates a good spark. The voltage at the spark plug can drive from 40,000 to 100,000 volts.

The high voltage necessarily travels down the electrode. Thus, an insulated passageway must be provided for the spark plug. This will allow the voltage to jump the gap and conduct into the engine block. Your GMC spark plug should withstand the extreme heat and pressure inside the cylinder. This must be designed in such a way that scaling from fuel additives will not occur. There are useful device, known as Ceramic insert, which is intended to isolate the high voltage at the electrode in the spark plug. This is capable of ensuring that the spark drives at the tip of the electrode and not anywhere else on the plug. Ceramic insert works double-duty while burning off deposits. It is a conductor that makes the material hot during operation. Such heat is necessarily used in the electrode to burn off deposits.

A hot plug is sometimes required in some vehicles. It is composed of a ceramic insert that faintly comes in contact with the metal portion of the plug. Such plug is used to reduce heat transfer from the ceramic. The objective behind this is to burn more deposits. A cold plug, on the other hand, is designed at larger contact area so that it would run cooler.

The right temperature plug is oftentimes set by manufacturers for certain vehicles. Some vehicles have high-performance engines that naturally generate more heat that's why they employ colder plugs. When the spark plug goes hot, it would ignite the fuel before the spark finally fires. The manufacturers are the first ones to know the most appropriate spark plugs for their vehicles, thus you must always consider the unit that fits the manufacturer's given specifications. This will help you sustain the excellent performance in your ignition system.
