This affects the stability and control of the vehicle during acceleration, braking and cornering. On the other hand, the second type of automobile body oscillation is vertical oscillation. This type of oscillation is directly caused by the contact of the tires with the road. The unevenness of the road due to bumps, road cracks and holes, cause the tires to move up and down, transmitting vibrations to the whole automobile. These vibrations are the vertical oscillations compensated by the automobile shocks.

Automobile shocks are typically integrated with coil over springs. These shocks are installed for the individual wheels of the vehicle, allowing independent movement. The shocks typically operate pneumatically. They are typically designed as cylinder and piston mechanisms. The shaft absorbs the vertical oscillations of the individual wheels by cushioning the compressive force against a medium of air and oil.
