A car spring will naturally extend and release the energy it absorbs from a bump at an uncontrolled amount. And this spring will continuously bounce under its normal frequency until all the energy initially placed into it is consumed. Hence, a suspension system that’s made up of spring alone would yield an extremely bouncy and uncomfortable ride, and depending on the ground, an unmanageable vehicle. It is because of this that shocks are extremely important.

Shocks, popularly known as shock absorbers or snubber, are significant components in the vehicle’s suspension system that works along with a spring or torsion bar to manage the up-and-down movement at each vehicle corner. Shock absorber controls unwanted spring motion via a process dubbed as dampening which happens as the springs compress and rebound during vehicle travel. Shocks greatly affect vehicle control and handling and they significantly keep the tires on the road. That’s the reason why shocks are usually changed or improved if the driver wants enhanced ride quality and handling.

Basically, a shock absorber is an oil pump located between the car’s frame and the wheels. The upper mount of the shocks is connected to the frame while the lower mount is connected to the axle, which lies close to the wheel. One of the most popular types of shock absorber is the twin-tube design. Here, the upper mount is linked to a piston rod, which is then connected to a piston, which lies in a tube and is filled with hydraulic fluid.

Shock absorbers like GMC shock absorber works in two cycles. These are the compression cycle and the extension cycle. The compression phase happens when the piston moves downward and compresses the hydraulic fluid in the chamber found below the piston. The extension cycle takes place as the piston moves to the top of the pressure tube and compresses the fluid in the chamber that’s above the piston. The compression cycle is the process that control’s the vehicle’s unsprung weight while the while extensions takes charge of the heavier unsprung weight.

It is always wise to invest in adjustable shocks. These components provide the ride quality and control that adjust to both on-and-off road applications. Sometimes, they are also employed for towing and hauling jobs. This and other types of shocks such as GMC shocks are always available at Parts Train.
