Since the introduction of seatbelts in the 1900s, they have evolved to different types such as the lap, two-point, sash, lap and sash, three-point, criss cross belt, five-point harnesses, six-point harnesses, and the inertia reel. In fact it was a Ford vehicle that used the first two-point seat belt called the AutoCrat Safety Belt in 1956. The inertia reel is commonly employed in today’s modern cars because they can adapt to different body types. It has three different types namely : the NLR (No Locking retractor), ELR V (Emergency Locking Retractor - Vehicle sensitive) ,and the ELR VW (Emergency Locking Retractor - Vehicle and Webbing sensitive).The three-point type uses an inertia reel design and employs just a single piece of webbing.

Seatbelts are mostly fitted with locking mechanisms that pulls the belt tighter but does not tautens when pulled slowly. This is very useful during a crash because it pulls the body of the passenger tightly in place to avoid getting thrown. It has a centrifugal clutch that slots in as the reel quickly turns. Aside from the clutch, a weighted pendulum or ball bearing can also be used as a lock.
