Just right behind every Saab’s grille is the heart of the engine’s cooling system – the Saab radiator. This very important component is a kind of heat exchanger whose function is to transfer heat from the hot coolant that flows through it to the air blown with the aid of the fan. From the inlet, the coolant flows to the outlet through many tubes mounted and arranged in a parallel pattern. What the fins do is that they conduct heat from the tubes and then transfer it to the air flowing through the radiator. Basically, radiators are made of aluminum and are formed by brazing aluminum fins to flattened aluminum tubes.

On each side of the radiator is a tank that contains the transmission cooler. This cooler is a sort of a radiator within the radiator itself. You should not be confused with its name suggesting that the radiator radiates heat. The truth is, your radiator dissipates the coolant’s heat by convection and not by radiation. This is explained in the process. The coolant, after absorbing all the heat in the engine block enters the radiator through the radiator hose. Subsequently, the coolant trickles down the small tubes that complete the radiator core.

Because overheating is one of the most common automobile breakdowns, radiator is indispensable component of every motor vehicle. Overheating takes place when the temperature of the coolant exceeds the normal operating temperature range of the engine. Its common causes include idling under hot weather for prolonged time period, leaking that causes the coolant level to drop. Also note that when the water pump fails to turn fast enough, the coolant will not be efficiently circulated.

In the occurrence of overheating, you must know how to deal with it. Firstly, you must turn off the AC as this will lessen the engine’s temperature. Note that the AC evaporator is just in front of the radiator hence it adds heat to the air going to your engine. Now, you must turn on the heater though this may give you feeling of discomfort. This will cool down the engine by transferring the heat to the air. Check the overflow tank coolant level. You need to refill it when it’s empty. And by wrapping a cloth around the upper radiator hose and squeezing it you will know the pressure of the system. If it’s under pressure, place a large cloth over the radiator cap and release the pressure. It takes patience while doing this stuff. But, guaranteed that this will help.
