Oxygen sensors like the Toyota oxygen sensor are spark plug-shaped mechanisms designed to serve as an important component of the vehicle’s exhaust system and that of the emissions control system. In a wide sense, an oxygen sensor is an electronic device that measures the proportion of oxygen in the gas or liquid that is being analyzed.

Inside the oxygen sensor, there is a sensing element that is usually made up of a zirconium ceramic bulb coated on both sides with a thin layer of platinum and comes in both heated and unheated forms. This oxygen sensor is also used in some other application aside from that of the automotive technology.

If you hear the terms O2 sensor, lambda probe, lambda sensor, lambda sond and EGO as exhaust gas oxygen sensor, you get to know that they all refer to the automotive oxygen sensor. These sensors are small sensing devices inserted into the exhaust system of a petrol engine to measure the volume of oxygen remaining in the exhaust gas to allow an electronic system to control the efficiency of the combustion process in the engine.

After the oxygen was gauged by the sensor, information regarding the volume of leanness or richness of fuel in the mixture or air is brought to the engine management electronic control unit computer. The ECU computer then makes the necessary adjustments of the mixture to give the engine the best possible fuel economy and lowest possible exhaust emissions.
