Did you check your Acura oxygen sensor when you have your tune-up? If truth be told, most car owners never give importance to their oxygen sensors when they do their tune-up. They make sure that their spark plugs are checked, their oil is changed, and their oil filter is replaced but their oxygen sensors are left ignored. Perhaps they don’t know that their oxygen sensors like the other parts of their vehicle also need proper maintenance.

The oxygen sensor is one of the components that help our cars perform at its best. Aside from that, oxygen sensors are a big help in acquiring fuel economy and lowest emission. For that reason, they should always be in good condition. The oxygen sensor is mounted in the exhaust manifold downpipe facing the catalytic converter or between the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter.

Oxygen sensors have been standard on cars produced after 1980. Its purpose is to read the amount of oxygen in your exhaust and tells your fuel injector how much fuel the engine needs to maintain the proper air-fuel ratio because all spark combustion engines need the proper air-fuel ratio to operate properly. The sensing element on almost all oxygen sensors in use is a zirconium ceramic bulb coated on both sides with a thin layer of platinum. The exterior of the bulb is exposed to the hot exhaust gases, whereas the interior of the bulb is vented internally through the sensor body or wiring to the outside atmosphere.
