Every vehicle manufactured after 1980, including the Alfa Romeo, has been produced with an oxygen sensor.  Your Alfa Romeo oxygen sensor controls your emissions and helps the engine to run efficiently.  In every vehicle, there is a specific ratio of air and gas that is perfect for optimal performance.  Each model vehicle has a different ratio that is determined by the amount of hydrogen and carbon found in the gasoline.  It is the oxygen sensors job to maintain that perfectly balanced ratio.  Less air in the mixture is called a rich mixture.  A rich mixture leaves excessive fuel behind after combustion and causes pollution.  More air in the mixture is considered a lean mixture.  A lean mixture may produce more nitrogen-oxide pollutants and has the potential of causing poor engine performance and, sometimes, engine damage.  The oxygen sensor can be found in the exhaust pipe and detects rich or lean air mixtures.  It sends the information to the engine’s computer and the engine’s computer adjusts the amount of fuel accordingly.
