If you’ve realized that it’s time to replace your GMC oil pan, make sure to be extremely careful with the installation.  One of the most common errors made while replacing an oil pan is excessively tightening the bolts.  By overly tightening the bolts, you can crush the gaskets, and push the front cover and oil pan inward.  Excessive tightening can result in a worse leak than the one you set out to try to fix in the first place.  The oil pan is manufactured from a thin piece of steel and molded deep into a section at the bottom of your crankcase.  Not only does the oil pan act as a reservoir, it also plays host to the oil pump and drain plug.  Once you’ve turned off your engine, oil flows down from the sides of the crankcase and collects in the oil pan.  The oil gathered is continuously tossed around and that is why you’ll likely discover a leak from the oil pan before you’ll discover it anywhere else.
