Deeply molded into a section at the bottom of your crankcase is a component called the oil pan.  Your Geo oil pan is constructed from a thin piece of steel.  It acts as a reservoir and is host to the oil pump and drain plug.  Oil pours from the sides of the crankcase and into the oil pan once you’ve turned your engine off.  The oil that collects in the pan is constantly tossed around while the vehicle is running.  Because of this continuous tossing, a leak will usually be spotted coming from the oil pan before anywhere else.  If you are planning to replace your own oil pan, it’s important to work carefully.  Over tightening the gaskets can crush them and push the front cover and oil pan inward.  Excessive tightening can result in a leak worse than the one you were trying to fix in the first place.
